The city of San Fernando sits in the heart of the San Fernando Valley and is located just outside of busy city of Los Angeles. The 2010 Census reported there were 23,645 residents in San Fernando, which increased just 0.3 percent while California's overall population increased by 10 percent from the 2000 Census.
Data from the census showed that there were 6,291 housing units in San Fernando in 2010 of which 54.5 percent were occupied by owners while 45.5 percent were occupied by renters. The median value of owner-occupied housing units between 2006 and 2010 was $377,000, just under the state's median housing of $458,500. The difference in median values parallels the difference in median household incomes, as the median income for households in San Fernando was $49,716 while the statewide average was $60,883.
The 2010 Census reported the median age of San Fernando residents was around 31 years old and the largest age group was those aged 25 to 44 making up 30.2 percent of the total population. Additionally, 29.4 percent of residents were under the age of 18 years old while 8.4 percent were 65 years of age or older.
