Located in the South Bay region of Los Angeles, just 5 miles south of the busy city, Hermosa Beach sits between Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach and its average temperature of 70 degrees in the summer makes it a popular destination for both vacationers and residents who enjoy the laid-back lifestyle compared to the hectic attitude of some more urban real estate listings in Los Angeles.
While only accounting for 1.5 square miles, the 2010 U.S. Census reported the city's total population was just 19,506 but the number of residents in the wealthy community grew 5.1 percent between 2000 and 2010 while the overall population of California grew 10 percent.
Data showed that there were 10,162 housing units in Hermosa Beach and the homeownership rate between 2006 and 2010 was 45.6 percent, just under the state's rate of 57.4 percent. The Census also reported that the median value of owner-occupied housing units was just over $1 million while the median household income fell just under the $1 million mark.
The beach lifestyle and entertainment offerings have attracted a variety of residents. The 2010 Census listed the median age of residents of Hermosa Beach as 37, and 15.9 percent of the population was under 18 years of age while only 9 percent were over 65 years of age.
