Located in Los Angeles County, the city of Gardena has always provided residents with a close community offering some of the nicest homes in Los Angeles County for families and was previously home to a farming community back in the 1950s. The 2010 U.S. Census of Population and Housing reported there were only 58,829 residents of Gardena, and while the population grew 1.9 percent from 2010, it fell short of the overall population growth of California.
The data from the census indicated that 35 percent of households had children under the age of 18 while there were 21,472 total housing units in Gardena. Of the total housing units, 47.9 percent were owner-occupied while renters occupied 52.1 percent. The median value of owner-occupied housing units between 2006 and 2010 was $417,800, just slightly less than California's median value of $458,500, while the median rent paid each month was just $998.
The census listed the median age of residents as around 40 years of age and 22.8 percent of the population was under the age of 18. The largest age group was those between 25 to 44 years old while 14.1 percent of those living in Gardena were 65 years of age or older.
