The town of Altadena sits in the heart of Los Angeles County, just 14 miles from the busy downtown of Los Angeles and near the affluent city of Pasadena. The 2010 Census of Population and Housing reported there were 41,777 residents of the town, which was relatively stable since the 2000 Census. Meanwhile, the overall population of California grew 10 percent, and is now home to more than 37 million people.
Data shows there were 15,947 housing units in Altadena, at an average density of 1,826.8 per square mile. Around 71.6 percent of homes were occupied by owners while 28.4 percent were rented. The median value of owner-occupied homes between 2006 and 2010 was $639,600, notably higher than the statewide average of $458,500 and higher than the average price of homes for sale in Los Angeles County.
The 2010 Census listed the median age of residents as around 42 years old, while 22.2 percent of those living in Altadena were under and age of 18 and 14.2 percent of the population was 65 years of age or older.
